Emerging Brands Spotlight: Viola Ceramics Studio

Viola Ceramics Studio

Viola Ceramics Studio is a brand from the borderline of both design studio and handicraft studio.  The main material which I use in my work is ceramics. However, I would like to combine my passion for design, technology and handicraft in a similar manner as when I was combining ceramics, design and workshop graphics. Still the new is always going to be paired with my husband engineering point of view. He is always the very first person who verifies both the advantages and disadvantages of the certain idea ;). My dream is also to create the project for big companies and manufacturers of ceramics.

What made you want to become a designer?

I was always "lured" to art. At the very beginning, it was nothing more than crude attempts with various materials in many different areas. After  I finished high school on the profile of the antique renovation I planned to become an architect. However, I never finished such studies. In the meantime, I become interested in home decoration and design. Still, I was very young back then and I was to susceptible to stress. Hence, working with client discouraged me from this road.  However, ideas, projects as well as the creation of the environment around me are my companions until today. I love ceramics and it is a requited love. Hence, I help her to be a beautiful lady, so to speak.

Talk us through your latest product/s:

My newest projects are mosaics/wall decorations which I would love to develop in the XXL size and in 3D. Together with specialists in graphics and illustrators.  Nowadays I was able to start a cooperation with great and beloved tattooist Ghis Melou. He created a project inspired by the Japanese tattoo of two Koi fishes. Another project in the XXL scale is decorative knobs for furniture or doors. Both projects are going to be only for individual orders in single copies or short series. It is really labour-intensive but at the same time,  exclusive product.

Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

It is going on automatically. For a long time. I believe in energy and in the fact that the world is small and shaped in accordance with our ideas. Nothing is happening without a reason. I strongly believe in this, I am working even harder on myself, obviously with my husband support, meditation, strong will as well as patience which ceramics taught me. I was always able to lure people and they were able to find me. It is funny that whenever I enter an empty shop, only after a few seconds there is a queue.

What goals would you like to achieve for your company in the future?

I would like to present the high standards of my work as well as the experience I gained during many years of me working in various fields. My dream is to participate in the creation of prototypes and implementing of products for a large scale. In order to do so, I need to cooperate with manufacturers, other designers as well as with craftsmen. In the following time, I am going to work on using the network of craftsmen I meet during the years I spend in Poland. Furthermore, I want to travel in order to find many other workshops and design studios with which I would be able to start the cooperation.

In contemporary society, an online presence is key in order to grow your design firm – How do you utilize the internet to increase your customer base?

I agree with this in 100% and I am doing everything to "appear" on the Internet. It is not easy, it is an everlasting learning. Social profiles are constantly shifting their algorithms, instead of helping they are making things more complicated.  More and more bots are appearing and spam is attacking the email. Hence marketing is less popular. I tried to cooperate with the e-commerce company but it did not provide me with any profits. Currently, my biggest canal for finding new clients is Etsy. In the last few months, I was able to gain a few dozens of new customers mainly from the USA, Canada and Australia.

Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?

I am also a teacher by trade. For a few years, I was teaching designing and moulding in the Private Ceramics School in Warsaw.  I was also a curator of a few displays connected with the topic. I was also a chairman of the association which main aim was to support dying jobs. Hence, I know how important it is to educate the society and participation in displays in order to show your skills to people. About 100% Design I heard very good opinions. Furthermore, I had seen the quality of designers choice. Hence I decided to take a shoot. I am "green" in the UK, hence I am perfect for Emerging Brands.
